What Baptists
Believe About Sanctification
Prayer: That the Holy Spirit will enable us to understand the truth.

X. OF Sanctification
We believe that sanctification is the process by which, according to the
will of God, we are made partakers of his holiness; (1) that it is a
progressive work; (2) that it is begun in regeneration; (3) and that it is
carried on in the hearts of believers by the presence and power of the
Holy Spirit, the Sealer and Comforter, in the continual use of the
appointed means - especially, the word of God, self-examination,
self-denial, watchfulness, and prayer.(4)

Places in the Bible where taught.
(1) 1 Thess. 4:3. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification. 1
Thess. 5:23. And the very God of peace sanctify YOU Wholly. 2 Cor. 7:1;
13:9; Eph. 1:4.
(2) Prov. 4:18. The path of the just is as the shining light which shineth
more and more unto the perfect day. 2 Cor. 3:18; Heb. 6:1; 2 Peter 1:5-8;
Phil. 3:12-16.
(3) John 2:29. If ye know that he [God] is righteous, ye know that every
one that doeth righteousness is born of him. Rom. 8:5. They that are after
the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the
Spirit the things of the Spirit.
John 3:6; Phil. 1:9-11; Eph. 1:13, 14.
(4) Phil. 2:12, 13. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

pleasure. Eph. 4:11, 12;

Discussion by Leader:
1. What we are to study tonight.
2. Importance of the doctrine.
3. Baptists to be governed by the Word, not the opinions of men.

Parts for Assignment:
1. Sanctification for the whole man: spirit, soul, body. When for each
one? In God's sight man was completely sanctified when chosen in eternity.
In man's sight, progressive. Three tenses of salvation: past, present,
future.
2. It is a pro3ressive work. We are to grow in grace. First babes, then
children, then grown sons.
3. It is begun, insofar as the individual is concerned, in regeneration.
Carried on into the resurrection of the body.
4. It is carried on, not in the energy of the flesh by striving, but by
the indwelling Spirit of God, the believer yielding.
