Well, It has been a great pleasure for me to tell you about our horses and
I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed your visit. And so as I ride
through that muddy arena and off into the sunset, I wish to say, May God
Bless You and I hope that all of your days be Appy ones.......
Picture #4 bottom & this
update... *smile*
I sure don't know where the time goes, do you? It seems like only
yesterday that my Connie girl made that picture. But this is memory lane,
isn't it? Yea, that was somewhere about 33 years ago when that picture was
taken. And at this time and update of this page my little gal and I have
been married almost 43 years. Well it'll be 43 this coming Feb. 14. 2008,
Good Lord willing and the creek doesn't rise. *smile* Yea, this ole cowboy
got him a great little woman and one that has stuck right by me thru thick
and thin... We still have a few horses here on the Bar-K-Ranch but I don't
get out to the barn to fool with them much. Sorta traded my ridin horses
for this ole wheel chair but I get to watch them out the window when they
come up to the barn.
The boys and grand children come and ride sometimes and
I sit with my little panda bear and get to watch them. I still can walk a
little and I hobble up there and pet them sometimes and piddle with my ole
cars. Yea, I even ride my motorcycle once in a while. It's not like riding
a horse but a lot easier to get your leg across. *smile*
Ya know sometin folks? If I had it all to do over again?
I'd have slowed down and taken a little more time to smell the roses.
Seems like everyone's so busy they miss out on what is truly important in
life. Things like playing with the children, taking the wife out to eat or
just going for a nice ride and looking at some of God's beauty on an ole
back country road... Going to church together with the wife and kids,
where they sing those ole time songs. Just building memories. Good
memories. Yea, that's what I miss. But all in all, God has been mighty
good to this ole broken down country boy. And if you're a young person or
even a young person at heart, I hope that you maybe get something out of
what this ole man is telling you today... But I guess you never get too
old to take time to laugh, to love, and to share. And most important of
all, take time for God and build those memories around Him. Because life's
too short to let the best part slip away... I really can't complain
because I've crammed in a lot of livin into these years I've been here on
this old spinning planet. And when I leave this ole world, I'll not be
hobbling into Heaven... No Sir; I'm gonna slid into Heaven sideways,
shoutin,
WOW, What a Ride!
Well, *Smile* didn't mean to start preachin, * bigger smile* so let's go
on to my humorous but very true, last story. Shall we?

MY FINAL STORY; VAN THE DANCING HORSE!
I guess that I had better start at the beginning. I used
to play the radio while training Van in the arena and found that he really
liked listening to the music. I also discovered that when we were resting
he would prance in beat to the music and so I thought, why not and began
swinging my legs back and forth to the beat as we walked around. Before
long Van began holding his steps a little bit longer and hesitating his
steps to the beat and so started the dancing lessons. This got to become a
daily ritual which we both loved but
little did I know. (SMILE)
Well, I received word that a rodeo was coming to Hopkinsville and that the
Christian Co. Sheriff's Posse had been asked to present the colors. Upon
arriving that day I was asked if I would carry the American Flag and
present it during the National Anthem which was to be played by one of the
local high school bands. Of course I was highly honored that I had been
asked and after saddling up Van I took the American Flag only to discover
that there was no holder for the pole. The holder is usually hooked to the
saddle horn so as to hold it securely in position. It seemed as though
this was an unusually large flag and with the wind blowing it was wrapping
all around Van's face. I placed the flag pole on the toe of my boot and
held it back as far as I could to keep it from hitting poor ole Van in the
kisser.
The object of this presentation was for the Posse to lope our horses
around the arena twice and then to line up in the middle of the arena. I
was then to bring the American Flag out in front about
15 feet and in center of the grand stands. The high school band would then
play and we were then to lope our horses once around the arena and then
gallop once around and then politely leave. Sounds simple enough right?
Well, everything was going fine, we loped around and lined up. I then
pulled Van to the center, sat as tall in the saddle as I could, and held
the Flag back to keep it out of Van's face as much as possible.
All was going great, that is until the band began to play. Van began
prancing or should I say dancing to the music and if that wasn't bad
enough, you know that part in the National Anthem where the cymbals clash?
Well! I don't know how many cymbal players they had but it sounded like
every cymbal in the whole country clanged. It was to much for poor old Van
and he reared straight up with me holding on for dear life, not wanting to
drop the Flag. I was afraid we were going to topple over but Van managed
to keep his balance and after a second of stumbling around regained his
composure.
It took me a little longer. LOL If we weren't the center of everyone's
attention before, we sure nuff were then. Now when it came to the part for
the cymbals to clang the next time the band director held his hand out and
patted down and the cymbals went a soft cling. I was very happy for that
because I don't think I could have withstood another explosion from Van.
LOL As we galloped around to leave everyone was laughing and cheering.
Some said it was the best presentation they had ever seen. I was just glad
that I had taught Van to dance and not to march...LOL
Sure hope that you liked my story.
