The
Appaloosa Saga continues
Down Memory Lane!
Pg 4

In Picture #1
This is Miss Nan, a truly remarkable lady. She was born in 1911 and was
never married. She owned and operated a 450 acre farm by her self and when
we met her in 1973 was running about 30 head of horses of which around 98%
were Appaloosa's.
Miss Nan was the President of the Blue Grass Appaloosa Horse Club until
her passing in 1987. It was Miss Nan who was the primary person in
boosting interest in the appaloosa horse in this entire area. She was a
selective breeder who keep the very best bloodlines going and her horses
showed the many hours of hard work that she had invested in them. Many of
her horses were not only state champions but national champions as well.
She also had a world champion or two.
She was loved and respected by all and it didn't matter if you were rich
or poor as a church mouse, Miss Nan always had time to show you her horses
or she would help you with your horse problems. She was very knowledgeable
when it came to her favorite breed of horse, the appaloosa, and she was
responsible for promoting the breed all over the country. Any time that we
wanted to do something special it was go to Miss Nan's and look at her
horses. She and Connie wee great friends and she would get the boys to
help her at the shows to set up. Scott helped her the most though because
he didn't care much about showing and he would rather set up barrels and
poles and help in the trail classes and such. I sure do miss going over to
her farm and visiting with her. Nan's old farm place just isn't the same
now. When you drive by all the fences are gone and the beautiful appaloosa
horses that grazed there are no more.
Well, Miss Nan's gone to heaven now and I miss her terribly, but I know
that one of these days we will see each other again. All I will have to do
is look where God keeps the appaloosa horses and that is where I'll find
Miss Nan, right in the middle of them.
Picture #2
You never knew what you might see when you went into Miss Nan's Stable.
Lucky I had the camera and caught Connie with a leash on Nan. I don't know
where they were headed but wherever it was, they were having fun getting
there. Those two were always into something. It was like a three ring
circus just being around them. Laughing and joking about something all the
time. No time to be bored around those two.
Picture #3
Yep, That is Connie standing there with me and Van. In case you hadn't
noticed, she is holding hands with me after all those years of marriage
with this old coot too. How romantic, I must be doing something right,
huh?
Picture #4
Van was getting bored with all the training and so I let him talk with
Sabrina and baby for a few minutes. You can see by looking that it really
perked him up...LOL

This Story
is About Tekee Tom Tom
The Lovin horse
Tekee was a 2 year old Kentucky State Reserved Grand Champion in the
halter class and I guess that, other than Van, he loved me more than life
itself. I was working 12 hrs. a day at the T.V.A. Paradise Power Steam
Plant and because of the long hours was unable to go to one of our
Registered horse shows. And so Connie and the boys loaded up the horses
and away they went. Jimmy was to show Tekee in the halter class, but as he
was leading him into the arena Tekee somehow got loose.... eeeeeeek!
Normally, this would have been a great problem because of the other
stallions and mares readily available, and some of them were worth
thousands of dollars, but apparently Tekee thought that a very large
fellow with a big black hat standing across the arena was me and he made
his way over to the man and nuzzled right up to him, so ending the scary
problem.
A short time after that I was working in the garage preparing my truck for
a paint job and I guess that Tekee got curious as to what I was doing in
that garage. Now he was in a 1 strand electric temporary fence and I had
never had any problem with him getting out. This particular day though, as
I was sanding on the truck I look up at there stood Tekee in the doorway
just watching me. It seems as though he had broken the fence and came to
check out what I was doing.
Well I took him to the barn, turned off the electric fence, repaired it,
put Tekee back inside the fenced area, turned back on the electricity, and
went back to the garage to resume working. A few minutes later I looked up
a there stood Tekee again. The whole procedure was repeated and I went
back to work. A little while went by and Lo and behold, there Tekee was
again. I thought that something must have been wrong with the fence but
upon touching it found that it had plenty of zip. That fence knocked the
holy fire out of me.
Well, I went though the procedure again, only this time I watched through
a crack in the door to see how Tekee was breaking that fence. It was in
the fall of the year and Tekee had some winter hair growth. What that
rascal was doing was hunkering down, rubbing up against the wire fence
with his chest until the fence snapped. He was using that winter coat to
act as an insulator against the electrical wire. Pretty smart if you ask
me.
By this time I had become quite aggravated to say the least because I
wasn't getting anything accomplished. So I decided to fix ole Tekee up. I
first tied Tekee to the garage, got the sheers out and shaved his chest.
Next I filled a 5 gallon bucket of water and poured it on the ground where
he had been breaking out. I went through the procedure of repairing
everything again and after turning Tekee loose ran back to the garage to
watch through to crack. Well after a few minutes ole Tekee eased up to the
fence and POW! That blue blaze of electricity connected with his bare
chest and I'll swear, he jumped 6' straight into the air..... LOL
Was he one surprised horse. Needless to say, I wasn't hampered with ole
Tekee any more that day.... I will say, that evening I felt a little bit
bad about doin him such, knowing he was just wanting a little lovin from
me, so I gave him a extra bucket of sweet feed and an apple.
And yes, he still loved me! He was a very special stallion...........

Want to thank you for letting me share some Of my stories with you and I
hope that you'll look at the rest of this ole' man's Horses Section.
